Though called Church Hill by locals, this area on the east side of the City of Richmond actually encompasses several distinct neighborhoods including Union Hill, Fulton Hill, Fulton Heights, and Church Hill proper. Home to the oldest homes and neighborhoods in the Richmond city limits, you'll find some 18th and many 19th century homes. The neighborhoods are sprinkled with restaurants and make for one of the most walkable areas in town.
History: Few areas of Richmond are as rich in history as Church Hill. Whether you are looking to stroll the cobblestone streets to view early 19th century homes or visit St. John’s Church, the site of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give me liberty, or give me death†speech, you will find it here in the east end of the City of Richmond.
Dining: During the last decade, Church Hill has become known for its outstanding restaurant scene. Several have been named the Top Restaurant in Richmond by Style Weekly, including Dutch & Co. and Metzger's. But the great food isn't limited to fine dining. Local bakeries and coffee shops also receive raves, and neighborhood staples like the Hill Cafe and Captain Buzzy's Beanery have been serving the locals for decades.
The Flood Wall and the Riverfront
Downtown Richmond features a flood wall with a walking and bike path and historic markers. Take a weekend stroll along this path and read about the early history of Richmond, or bike until it meets the Capital Trail at Great Shiplock Park, and ride from there all the way to Williamsburg.
Stone Brewery
No description of Church Hill would be complete without mention of Stone Brewery. This investment in the Greater Fulton community consists of 14 acres on the border of Henrico and the City, and is already a destination for many locals and beer seeking tourists alike.
The Roosevelt
A nationally recognized restaurant within the bustling Church Hill dining scene, the Roosevelt features James Beard Award-nominated chef Lee Gregory and serves nouvelle American cuisine. Be sure to try the signature cocktail, the Seersucker.
